Gateway Regional Medical Center offers general and specialized surgical procedures. Many of these procedures are available on a same-day, outpatient basis.
Whether yours is an inpatient or an outpatient procedure, Gateway Regional Medical Center’s surgical services are designed to be convenient and provide you and your family the best experience possible.

Preoperative Examination and Testing for All Types of Surgery
Your physician may order preoperative testing, including labs, electrocardiography (EKG), X-Rays, and a visit with an anesthesiologist.
Preoperative testing will normally be scheduled a few days prior to surgery. All laboratory blood work must be completed within 14 days prior to surgery. Chest X-Rays and EKG’s are valid up to 30 days prior to your surgery.
Please bring the following with you to your preoperative examinations:
- List of all medications
- Insurance information
- All other Laboratory results, including x-rays and your physician’s evaluation.
Preoperative Instructions
We encourage you to ask questions if you don’t understand. You may call the hospital at (618) 798-3839 and the Pre-Screen Nurse will provide you further information or instruction. You may also call your physician.
- Do not eat or drink anything (not even water) after midnight the night before your operation.
- Do not wear any makeup and leave jewelry and other valuables at home.
- Bathe or shower and brush your teeth without swallowing any water
- Get a good night’s rest before your appointment.
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home approximately 2-4 hours after your outpatient surgery.
- Do not smoke or chew gum after arriving at the hospital
- If you wear dentures, you may remove them preoperatively
- Notify the surgeon of any changes in your physical condition (cold, fever, etc)
- If the patient is a child, you may bring a favorite doll, toy or book.
Postoperative Instructions
After surgery you may to go the recovery room, located in Same Day Surgery on the first flood of the hospital. The length of your stay in recovery varies, depending on the type of surgery. Your family will be able to visit once you leave recovery and move to an outpatient surgery area.
Surgery, specifically general anesthesia, can leave you feeling very tired, with a loss of appetite. We suggest you resume food intake slowly, beginning when you feel hungry.

- Do not DRIVE
- Do not DRINK alcoholic beverages
- Beware of DIZZINESS
- Do not make critical DECISIONS
- Do DISCUSS any questions or problems you may have with your physician.
Please call your doctor’s office to schedule your follow up visit, if it hasn’t been scheduled already.

As a stand-alone surgery center, the Edwardsville Ambulatory Surgery Center provides quality and convenient service, with the same technology at Gateway Regional Medical Center.
